I'm an adult, what does art and imagination have to do with my therapy?

Updated: Oct 28, 2018

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." - George Bernard Shaw

Are you are wondering if using art and imagination in therapy is a bit New Age-y, you are not alone, I have heard this before.

In my practice I will at times incorporate the use of art materials, visualizations and meditations as therapeutic interventions to promote healing, growth and confidence...with adults!

Art is a form of expression that accesses parts of the brain that can communicate without having to find the words to do so. EMDR visualization techniques and guided meditations require your imagination to access your sensory experiences and deeply held beliefs about yourself, others and the world around you. This is an inherently creative experience.

Turns out there is a lot of science in your creativity. Our imaginations help us to form connections and promote healing in our brains. Being creative is like mental gymnastics, we grow stronger each we time we practice! Watch the video below to find out more.

Andrey Vyshedskiy details the neuroscience of imagination. Lesson by Andrey Vyshedskiy, animation by Tomás Pichardo-Espaillat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7uXAlXdTe4&t=5s ... Imagine, for a second, a duck teaching a French class. A ping-pong match in orbit around a black hole. A dolphin balancing a pineapple. You probably haven’t actually seen any of these things. But you could imagine them instantly. How does your brain produce an image of something you’ve never seen?
